Founded in 1989 as a campaign promise by the late Mario “IBON” Dela Cruz when he ran for Chairman of Zone 4, Barangay 51 in Dagupan St., Tondo, Manila, the Dagupan-Tondo
Volunteer Fire Brigade with one 750gal. fire engine dubbed “Dagupan Engine”. It was a FMC fire engine that was retired by the government. With financial support from the wood-based family enterprise, it was repaired and reconditioned. The organization was run by Mario and his cousin Robert. In 1991,Mario succumbed to a liver ailment that claimed his life at the age of 40. Over-all supervision was passed on to his cousin Robert who assumed the position of Fire Chief. The leadership of the brigade was reorganized by Robert to include a set of Board of Directors.
The year 1995 saw the addition of new water tanker in the form of an Isuzu tank lorry
That may claim to be the biggest in terms of water capacity. The 5,750 gal. tank lorry, christened “Dagupan Tanker” was soon to be joined by “Dagupan Pumper” and “Pumper 11”.The latter two units were put up by directors of the association as affiliates in their respective localities. Activities of the association was not confined to firefighting as the officers and men were also able to conduct medical/dental clinics, render water distribution during shortages and participate in clean-up and beautification campaigns.
In 2007, the family of Mr. Wilfredo Ramirez, owners of MGC Rice Brand, donated a Fuso stainless tank lorry to the Dagupan Tondo Volunteer Fire Brigade. The donation is their gesture if civic contribution to he community. The new fire tanker was blessed and activated for service on February 18, 2007.
Through the years, the officers and firefighters of Dagupan were able to perennially maintain their standing as one of the more active fire prevention units in the metropolis. |
